CHAIRISH WILDERNESS |
The Lake Placid Center for the Arts sponsors an event where artists are given a sample of the classic Adirondack chair and invited to zap it with their creativity. The results are displayed and auctioned for charity. My contribution was a chair with a message. On the front there was a painting of a wolf pack sitting in the moonlight and their eyes were flecks of gold leaf. Attached to the back of the chair was a small box with a hinged lid and in the box was an old penny and this message. The language is a bit stilted, I think because I was impersonating a chair. Wilderness is what happens when great age awakens in the present. Wilderness is a lens that allows us to see into the deep past and divine the uncharted future. Until the preservation of wilderness is no longer a battlefield in the class war there will not be peace here and there won't be any more wolves. If you want to bring back the wolves, deepen the wilderness and improve the lens, and strengthen the towns. When the towns are strong and accept stewardship of the park, then the wolves will be welcomed back. The return of our ancient enemies - who are so like us - will then be the mark of a time of deep peace.
